Who actually picks up the phone

Most days it’s Renee Ellison, co-owner and office manager, taking your call and building the schedule herself — not a call center reading from a script. Every mover on the truck is a W-2 Moving Kings employee we hired and trained ourselves, never day labor brought on for a single job.

Common Independence Moving Questions, Answered

Is Moving Kings a real crew, or a booking service?▾

We're a real, licensed Independence moving company — we own our 6 trucks and employ our 10-person crew directly, and we never hand your job off to a third-party carrier or subcontractor.

What determines the price of my move?▾

For a full household move, home size and how much you're moving set the flat rate. Labor-only jobs are billed hourly by crew size, and long-distance moves are priced by route.

Do you require a deposit to book?▾

Yes, a $150 refundable deposit holds your date and crew, and it comes straight off your final invoice on move day.

What's your cancellation policy?▾

Cancel or reschedule at least 72 hours ahead and your deposit is fully refunded; closer than that, the deposit covers the crew time we held open for you.

Do you offer any discounts?▾

Yes — veteran, disabled, and active or retired military discounts are applied directly to your written quote before you ever sign it.

Will the price on my written quote actually match what I pay?▾

Yes, that's the point of a flat rate — the number Renee sends you in writing is the number on the invoice, with no fuel, stair, or mileage surcharges added later.

What's included in a flat-rate household move?▾

Loading, transport, unloading, basic furniture pad-wrapping, and placement in the rooms you choose are all part of the flat rate.

What's not covered by the flat rate?▾

Packing supplies, full-service packing labor, storage, and specialty-item fees for things like pianos or gun safes are priced as their own line items, not folded into the base rate.

How do you handle older Independence neighborhoods with narrow streets and no driveway?▾

A lot of the homes near the Square and along the Santa Fe Trail corridor sit on skinny residential streets built long before moving trucks existed. Our crew chiefs scout parking and truck staging during the walkthrough so move day isn't a surprise.

I'm in an apartment or condo — how do you handle elevators and loading docks?▾

We ask about elevator reservation windows and loading-dock rules when we book the job, then schedule the crew's arrival to match the building instead of showing up and hoping there's an opening.

Can you move a piano?▾

Yes — our crew chiefs rig pianos regularly and know how to get them down tight staircases without damaging the instrument or your walls. There's a separate $150–$300 fee depending on the piano and the access.

Can you move a gun safe?▾

Yes, gun safes get the same specialty handling as pianos, with a dedicated fee in that $150–$300 range and extra hands on the stairs when needed.

Do you move house plants?▾

We can move plants on local jobs, but for long-distance moves we'd rather you transport them yourself since hours in a truck aren't kind to them.

What happens if a summer heat wave hits on my move day?▾

Kansas City summers run into the 90s with heavy humidity, so we build in extra water and rest breaks for the crew. It slows the pace a little, but it doesn't cancel a move.

Do winter ice storms ever push back a move date?▾

A bad January ice storm can shut down roads like US-24, and if that happens we'll call to reschedule rather than risk the crew or your belongings on the drive.

What if there's a tornado watch or severe thunderstorm warning on my move day?▾

Spring in Jackson County means we keep an eye on the sky during loading. If an actual warning is issued we'll pause and wait it out rather than push the crew through it.

Who do I talk to if weather affects my move?▾

Call our office directly — Renee builds the schedule and handles date changes, so she's the one who'll walk you through rescheduling if weather gets in the way.

How does a long-distance move to somewhere like St. Louis or Omaha work?▾

The same crew that loads your home in Independence drives the route and unloads on the other end — there's no handoff to a different truck or a broker's driver partway through.

My closing dates don't line up — can you store my things between pickup and delivery?▾

Yes, short-term storage-in-transit covers exactly that gap, and we quote it as its own line item so you know the cost before move day.

How far in advance should I book a long-distance move?▾

Two to three weeks ahead gives us the best shot at your ideal date, though we can often work with less notice depending on the season.

Are you licensed and insured?▾

Yes — we hold a Missouri household goods carrier registration plus US DOT and MC authority for interstate moves, and every job carries $1M in cargo coverage. A certificate of insurance is available on request.

Do I need to be present for the whole move?▾

We ask that you or someone you trust be on-site at both pickup and delivery to walk the crew through and sign off at the end, but you don't need to watch every box go on the truck.

How do I pay, and when?▾

Payment is due once everything's unloaded and placed. We take standard cards as well as cash, and cash tips for the crew are appreciated but never required.

Do I need to empty my dresser drawers before the crew arrives?▾

Light clothing can usually stay in the drawers, but anything breakable, heavy, or liquid should come out first so the piece isn't too heavy to carry safely.

Will the crew disconnect my washer, dryer, or other appliances?▾

Basic disconnects like a washer hose or dryer vent are fine for our crew, but gas-line appliance disconnects need a licensed plumber first for safety.

What if something gets damaged during my move?▾

Every move is covered by our $1M cargo policy. If anything happens, you report it to our office and Renee walks you through the claim directly instead of routing you to a third party.
